Acne is one of the most common diagnoses addressed in the dermatology office, whether as a primary or secondary complaint. In treating a great deal of adolescent, young adult, and adult acne I get asked the three following questions several times a day:
ACNE MYTH #1: USING SCRUBS AND CLARIFYING BRUSHES ARE GOOD TO KEEP SKIN SQUEAKY CLEAN
In an attempt to keep pores clear it is common to over exfoliate, which can actually cause pore-engorging inflammation… the opposite of what you’re going for. Swap gritty scrubs for a much gentler wipe or pad infused with chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid and/or salicylic acid.
ACNE MYTH #2: A BAD DIET CAUSES ACNE
Although most parents want me to say “YES, chocolate, pizza, and soda cause acne,” I can’t say that is all completely true. Eating a well balanced diet is the best option for overall health, but it is not a large reason why someone has acne.
Although there are some studies which show that a high glycemic index diet or chocolate can worsen acne in acne-prone individuals, in general it is not the primary cause of acne.
Acne forms when the oil glands make too much sebum, a waxy substance that along with dead skin cells can clog pores. Bacteria grow and irritate the blocked pores, giving the red and swollen look to them. The main causes are hormones and genetics.
ACNE MYTH #3: MOISTURIZER MAKES MY ACNE WORSE, I DON’T USE IT
It is important to moisturizer your face with a non-comedogenic moisturizer (for acne prone skin), meaning it does not clog your pores. There are a lot of amazing moisturizers that are made to hydrate, repair, and rejuvenate your skin; however, many of these are not made for acne prone skin, and can cause acne. Look at the label and ensure it says “For Acne Prone Skin” or “Non-Comedogenic”. If you have not been moisturizing you skin it may be causing your acne! You might be causing your skin to become overly dry, causing your skin to produce more oil… leading to acne! Bottom line, choose a moisturizer for acne prone skin and use it twice a day!
