What are wrinkles & how can we prevent them?

Wrinkles are folds and creases on our skin that develop as we get older due to decrease in collagen and elastin. They can happen due to chronic sun damage, smoking or even environmental factors such as pollution. Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process and can also be due to repeated facial expressions such as frowning or squinting. Genetics also play a role and certain skin types are more prone to sun damage resulting in wrinkles.


The best ways to prevent wrinkle formation is sunscreen use, sun protection and avoiding tanning beds.


There are many ways to treat wrinkles.

Over the counter options such as topical creams usually help with fine lines and mild wrinkles whereas in office procedures including botulinum toxin and lasers help with deeper wrinkles

1) Over the counter options include topical creams with active ingredients such as retinoids, antioxidants such as Vitamin C,E, peptides or even alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic and lactic acids. These can be used daily and usually take several weeks to see results
2) Prescription strength retinoids that are stronger than over the counter retinols such as tretinoin treat wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. These can also be used daily, usually at night.
3) In office treatments such as botulinum toxin temporarily paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles and the results are much more obvious. The results become noticeable within 2 weeks after treatment and lasts 3-6 months. Sometimes fillers can also be used to plump up skin to smooth wrinkles
4) Chemical peels, depending on the depth of the peel can lead to smoother skin. Usually, chemical peels are done on a monthly basis.
5) Laser treatment can stimulate collagen production in the skin and helps with wrinkles. Depending on the type of laser, multiple treatments might be required to see full effects.
6) Microneedling can also lead to increased collagen production and smooth skin. Multiple sessions are usually required and can be done every 4-6 weeks
