How do you get rid of blackheads?

How do you treat blackheads?

While it is tempting to squeeze blackheads or try to pop them, it’s best to avoid squeezing/popping to avoid trauma and possible hyperpigmentation/scar.

There are multiple blackhead removal tools but when using at home, if done improperly you could push down the dead skin cells or dirt clogging the hair follicles. You could introduce bacteria leading to an infection or cause irritation, inflammation leading to hyperpigmentation and scarring

Blackhead removal tools are also short-term fix and not long term solutions.

When should you see a dermatologist?

There are some over the counter options to treat blackheads including salicylic acid washes, benzoyl peroxide or retinoids. However, for the stubborn hard to treat blackheads, it’s best to see a dermatologist for prescription- strength retinoids, oral medications, chemical peels (such as a salicylic acid peel to remove dead skin cells and exfoliate skin) as well as laser resurfacing treatments.

Are pore strips or pore vacuums safe to use?

Pore strips and pore vacuums are very popular on social media to treat blackheads, but it is important to be careful about the potential damage that these can cause on the skin. Pore vacuums can cause serious trauma to the skin leading to broken capillaries. Instead, it’s best to see a dermatologist for safer and gentler treatment options that are long term solutions rather than a short-term fix.
