Newport Dermatology & Plastic Surgery

Treat skin cancer and suspicious lesions with excision, a highly effective and precise surgical procedure. Excision is designed to completely remove abnormal or cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.

This trusted treatment is commonly used for basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and atypical moles, offering excellent cure rates when detected early.

How Does Excision Work?

Excision involves carefully removing the lesion along with a small margin of surrounding skin to ensure all abnormal cells are eliminated. The area is first cleansed and numbed with local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

Once removed, the tissue is sent to a pathology lab where it is examined under a microscope to confirm that all margins are clear of cancer. This step helps ensure complete removal and guides any further treatment if needed.

What to Expect During Excision Treatment

Excision is performed in-office under local anesthesia and is generally well tolerated. Most patients feel only a brief pinch during numbing, followed by minimal discomfort during the procedure.

After removal, the area is carefully closed using sutures to support healing and minimize scarring. A sterile dressing is applied, and you will receive detailed aftercare instructions.

Mild tenderness or tightness may occur for a few days, but most patients can return to normal daily activities shortly after treatment. Sutures are typically removed within **7–14 days**, depending on the location.
